General Interview Preparation
If the thought of interviewing makes you feel anxious or stressed, you're not alone. Remind yourself that if you've been invited to an interview, the company believes you can perform the job and they want an opportunity to learn more about you and ensure there's a mutual fit.
Below are some tips to help you feel more comfortable, confident, and prepared to present your best self during interview.
Below are some tips to help you feel more comfortable, confident, and prepared to present your best self during interview.
- Research the company and the role. Interviewers and hiring managers may gauge your motivation and level of interest by how much you know about their organization and the work they do. Visit the company's website and view the "About Us" section, check out their social media profiles, and read any articles or blog posts they've shared. Understanding what they do and learning about recent news or events they're excited about can help convey your excitement and interest in working with them.
- Consider how your qualifications match their needs. Think about your reasons for wanting the role and why you'd be a good fit for the job and the company overall. Carefully read the job description and identify the key experience, traits, and skills they're looking for and prepare examples of how your experience and abilities match their needs. You can also practice rehearsing your responses with a friend, family member, or even AI!
- Double-check your tech! Many companies today conduct video interviews, even for hybrid or on-site roles so find a quiet space to test your device's audio, video, and internet connection ahead of time and ensure everything is functioning properly to avoid delays.
- Prepare thoughtful questions to ask them. Interviewers typically set time aside towards the end of the interview for any questions you may have for them, and this is a good opportunity to show genuine curiosity and highlight your interest in the role. Prepare a few questions such as "What are the most important skills or set of experiences you're looking for?" or "What goals are you looking to achieve in the next 6 to 12 months and how will this role contribute to them?" and reiterate your fit or share additional context and information about yourself that may not have come up earlier in the conversation.
- Thank them for their time and follow up. Send a brief "thank you" email within 24 hours to everyone you meet with and personalize it by mentioning something specific you discussed during the interview. This small gesture can help you stand out from other candidates and emphasize why you're a great fit for the role and the company.
